Tips for Packing Like a Pro
-
Develop a master “to do” list so you won’t forget
something critical
-
Sort and get rid
of things you no longer want or need. Have a garage sale, donate
to a charity, or recycle
-
Don’t throw out everything. If your inclination is
to just toss it, ask yourself how frequently you use an item and
how you’d feel if you no longer had it
-
Pack like items
together. Put toys with toys, kitchen utensils with kitchen
utensils
-
Decide what if anything you plan to move yourself.
Precious items, such as family photos, valuable breakables, or
must-haves during the move, should probably stay with you
-
Use the right
box for the item. Loose items encourage breakage
-
Put heavy items in small boxes so they’re easier to
lift. Keep weight under 50 lbs. if possible
-
Don’t over-pack boxes and increase the chances they
will break
-
Wrap every fragile item separately and pad bottom
and sides of boxes
-
Label every box on all sides. You never know how
they’ll be stacked and you don’t want to have to move other boxes
aside to find out what’s there
-
Use color-coded labels to indicate which room each
item should go in. Color-code a floor plan for your new house to
help movers
-
Keep your moving documents together, including
phone numbers, driver’s name, and van number. Also keep your
address book handy
-
Back up your computer files before moving your
computer
-
Inspect each box and all furniture for damage as
soon as it arrives
Remember, most movers won’t take plants

What
you'll need for the first night/day
When everything is packed and ready to load, make
sure the items you need least are loaded first. Again, common sense
is essential when loading the truck. Place the box containing
fragile items on top of the heavy boxes and not vice versa
Prepare for the first night in your new home by
packing essential items in a separate bag and carrying it with you.
You may even want to prepare a simple meal that you can heat and
serve on your first night
- For each person in the household a change of
clothes, a towel, prescription drugs, a toothbrush, and other
personal items
- For everyone: plastic utensils, paper plates,
paper towels, plastic cups, toilet paper, toiletries, trash bags,
a flashlight, first aid kit including pain relievers, pencil and
paper, snacks, beverages, and re-closable plastic bags
- Small tool kit for re-assembling items that
couldn't be moved in one piece

More Packing Tips Pack with a plan!
- Keep the following supplies handy for packing:
Boxes, marking pen, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, newspaper and
tissue
- Tape and scissors
- Tape measure
- Use strong boxes and containers that can be
secured tightly. Purchase special boxes for dishes, wardrobe and
other special items
- Double box fragile items and cushion them
- Pack audio-video equipment in their original
boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws. If removing
screws, tape them to the objects from which they were removed
- Keep boxes light - no more than 50 pounds per
box
- Place heavy items in small boxes to make them
easier to carry
- Label each box and indicate the following
- In which room it should go
- Whether it is fragile
- If it should be loaded last so it will be
unloaded first
- Cushion contents with packing material such as
bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue. Save room by using towels and
blankets to wrap fragile items
- Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. If
musty smelling, sprinkle talcum powder between the pages and wrap
the book before packing. Leave stored for a couple of months to
eliminate the smell
- Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving
and leave them in wrappings for the move
- Pack medicines in a leak proof container
- Carry all valuables with you.
- Check with your local U.S. Department of
Agriculture for regulations regarding moving plants from one state
to another. Many states have restrictions on certain plants to
prevent importing bugs or pests that can destroy valuable cash
crops
